How Do Survey Companies Make Money?

I know that you can complete surveys online to make money, but i want to know, how do the survey companies make money? it seems a little suspicious to me. can any body help me out?

The companies amass the data and sell it to another company to help their marketing efforts
The life blood of all major coorporations are their products. So if their product were to do badly in the market, it would mean disaster for the company. To avoid that from happening, they need to know if their products or services are what people need or want.
That is where survey companies come in. They take that product and conduct surveys to see what are the areas that need improvements. This helps the major companies know what their customers want and need. They than alter the product according to their customers need from the surveys. This will help ensure that their product is a success.
You might be wondering this question since it seems that paying people $10 for just one survey might seem like wasting a lot of money from their part. But the fact is, by just spending those few thousands, they will be able to make millions in profit and also ensure that they do not make losses.
